Esto, que no deja de ser para muchos una ficción para ambientar la historia, ha sido sin embargo tomado como una declaración verdadera de Bulwer Lytton por muchos intelectuales relacionados con las ciencias esotéricas, quienes sostienen los presupuestos implícitos a la inmortalidad humana, y el hecho concreto de que existan hombres así en el mundo.

Partiendo de este esquema, el Premio Nobel William Golding crea una fábula moral sobre el lado más oscuro de la naturaleza humana. Una novela deslumbrante en la que se ha visto desde una requisitoria moral contra la educación represiva hasta una parábola acerca de los instintos básicos del ser humano.
William Golding (1911-1993) trastocó por completo el panorama literario de su tiempo con la publicación de El señor de las moscas (1954), que se convirtió de inmediato en un espectacular éxito internacional y se erigió en muy poco tiempo en todo un clásico contemporáneo. Posteriormente publicó las novelas Los herederos (1955), Martín el náufrago (1956), Caída libre (1959) y Ritos de paso (1980), entre otras. Es autor además de algunas obras teatrales y un volumen de poemas.
